Doxycycline for Pigeons, parrots, and chickens

Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the tetracycline family. Compared with older tetracyclines such as oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline, doxycycline offers:

• Better absorption in birds makes it a more effective treatment
• Longer duration of action for consistent results
• Less interference from feed (minerals like calcium reduce the effectiveness of other tetracyclines more  than Doxycycline)

Because of these advantages, Doxycycline is often a choice in water flock antibiotic for avian respiratory infections. (Tablets are also available for individual patient treatment)

Conditions Where Doxycycline Is Commonly Prescribed

🐓 Doxycycline Chickens.

• Effective against Mycoplasma gallisepticum and other bacterial causes of chronic respiratory disease
• Used for respiratory infections that affect backyard flocks.
• Used instead of poultry oxytetracycline and poultry chlortetracycline. 

🕊️ Pigeons

• Commonly prescribed for Chlamydia psittaci (ornithosis)
• Also used in treating bacterial infections that cause respiratory disease.
• Used instead of pigeon oxytetracycline and pigeon chlortetracycline as its much more effective

🦜 Parrots

• The leading in water antibiotic for psittacosis (parrot fever) caused by Chlamydia psittaci
• Helps control bacterial infections in birds.

Used instead of avian oxytetracycline and bird chlortetracycline as it is much more effective.

How Doxycycline Is Given to Birds

For our registered veterinary clients, Doxycycline may be prescribed in two forms:

• Oral medication (Tablets) for individual birds that need precise dosing
• Water-soluble medication for flock or group treatment

Both forms are tailored to the needs of chickens, parrots, or pigeons, ensuring safe and effective use. Oral dosing of birds with Doxycycline is more effective and reliable.
